Swine flu in the UK: what we know so far

  • A single case of swine flu has been detected in a person in North Yorkshire, England. This is the first time this strain of swine flu, influenza A(H1N2)v, has been detected in a human in the UK.
  • The person had respiratory symptoms but has since fully recovered. They are not known to have worked with pigs, and investigations are underway to determine how they contracted the virus.

  • Human infections with swine flu viruses do occur sporadically. There have been 50 cases of influenza A(H1N2)v reported globally since 2005.
  • The strain of swine flu detected in the UK is different from the strain that caused the 2009 pandemic. The 2009 pandemic strain, H1N1, now circulates in humans seasonally.
  • The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is monitoring the situation closely but currently assesses the risk to human health as low. They are working with partners to determine the characteristics of the pathogen and assess the risk to human health.
