Born on October 10, 1959, in Camberwell, London, MacColl was the daughter of folk singer Ewan MacColl and dancer Jean Newlove. She began her career as a teenager, performing in the theater and cabaret. She released her debut single, "They Don't Know," in 1980, but it was her cover of Billy Bragg's "A New England" that brought her mainstream success in 1981.

MacColl was a prolific and versatile artist, who recorded songs in a variety of genres, including pop, folk, and country. She also collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including The Pogues, Elvis Costello, and The Communards.

In 1997, MacColl released her most successful single, "Fairytale of New York" with The Pogues. The song has become a Christmas classic, but it was also met with controversy for its depiction of domestic violence.
