UK Interior Minister Suella Braverman fired after she
accused London police of political bias
UK Interior Minister Suella Braverman was fired on November 13, 2023, after she accused London police of political bias. Braverman had written an op-ed in The Times newspaper in which she criticized the police for being tougher on right-wing demonstrators than on pro-Palestinian marchers. Her comments sparked widespread criticism, both from within her own party and from the opposition.
Braverman's dismissal was seen as a sign that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was trying to assert his authority and to move away from the hard-right policies that had been associated with his predecessor, Liz Truss. Braverman had been a controversial figure throughout her time in government, and her firing was seen as a way for Sunak to draw a line under that period.
Braverman was replaced by James Cleverly, who had previously been Foreign Secretary. Cleverly is seen as a more moderate figure than Braverman, and his appointment was welcomed by many in the Conservative Party.
It is still too early to say what impact Braverman's dismissal will have on UK politics. However, it is clear that Sunak is trying to reshape his government in his own image.
