Emmett Shear is an American entrepreneur and the interim CEO of OpenAI, a non-profit research company with the stated goal of promoting and developing friendly artificial general intelligence. He is the co-founder and former CEO of Justin.tv, which was later renamed Twitch and acquired by Amazon in 2014 for $970 million.

Shear was born in 1979 in Redwood City, California. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied computer science. After graduating, he worked as a software engineer at several startups before co-founding Justin.tv in 2006.



Justin.tv was a live streaming platform that initially focused on broadcasting video game tournaments. However, the platform soon expanded to include a wider variety of content, such as music, cooking, and creative arts. Under Shear's leadership, Justin.tv became one of the most popular live streaming platforms in the world, with over 100 million monthly unique viewers.

In 2011, Justin.tv was renamed Twitch. The company continued to grow in popularity, and in 2014, it was acquired by Amazon for $970 million. Shear remained CEO of Twitch until 2018.


After leaving Twitch, Shear became a partner at Y Combinator, a prominent startup accelerator. In November 2023, he was appointed interim CEO of OpenAI following the departure of Sam Altman.
