Heatwave, fire, flood and cyclone: Sydney temperatures peak at 43C amid wild weather across Australia

Australia is facing a weekend of extreme weather, with temperatures in Sydney reaching 43C on Saturday, while parts of South Australia experienced intense rain and flooding. In addition, a severe tropical cyclone named Jasper is looming off the Queensland coast.

Heatwave

The heatwave has caused bushfires to break out across New South Wales, with firefighters battling to control the flames. The temperature in Sydney reached 43C on Saturday, making it the hottest day in the city since 2020.

Flood

Parts of South Australia have been hit by heavy rain and flooding, with some areas receiving up to 100mm of rain in a 24-hour period. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a flood warning for the Mt Lofty Ranges, Mid North and Eyre Peninsula.


Cyclone

Severe Tropical Cyclone Jasper is currently located in the Coral Sea about 1,000km east of Cairns. The system is expected to make landfall in the middle of next week, bringing destructive winds and heavy rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that the extreme weather conditions could lead to power outages, transportation disruptions and property damage. People in affected areas are urged to stay informed and follow the instructions of emergency services.
