Celtics honor Maine mass shooting victims with moment of silence, special jersey patch
Boston players wore the warmups of their NBA G League affiliate, the Maine Celtics, as well as a bond on their jerseys.
The Boston Celtics honored the victims of the recent mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, with a moment of silence and a special jersey patch during their home opener on Friday, October 27, 2023.
Players wore the warmups of the team's G League affiliate, the Maine Celtics, and donned a band on their jerseys that simply read "Maine." Fans also observed a pregame moment of silence while a green and white image of the outline of the state was displayed on the jumbotron.
The Celtics' gesture was a powerful way to show solidarity with the people of Maine and to honor the memory of those who were lost in the shooting. It was also a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is still hope and community.
Here is a poem I wrote to commemorate the Celtics' tribute:
Celtics Honor Maine
In the heart of Boston, green and white unite, To honor Maine, in its darkest night. Players warm up in Maine Celtics' gear, A symbol of hope, to quell our fear.
A jersey patch, with just one word, "Maine," a message, deeply heard. Fans stand silent, heads bowed low, As the weight of grief begins to show.
A moment of silence, for those who've passed, Their memories forever cast. The Celtics' gesture, a simple act, To show Maine, we're all on your back.
Together we stand, united as one, Against the darkness, until the dawn. Maine, we're with you, every step of the way, As we heal together, day by day.
