Round-by-round: Benavidez stops Andrade, wants Canelo next

David Benavidez retained his WBC interim super middleweight title and set his sights on undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez with a sixth-round stoppage of previously unbeaten Demetrius Andrade on Saturday night.
Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) dominated the fight from the opening bell, using his superior size and strength to bully Andrade around the ring. Benavidez landed heavy power punches throughout the fight, and Andrade's corner wisely stopped the bout after the sixth round.

"I knew I was going to knock him out," Benavidez said. "I'm the strongest guy in the division, and I proved it tonight. I want Canelo next. He's the best in the world, and I want to prove that I'm the best."

Andrade (31-1, 19 KOs) was making his first defense of the WBO super middleweight title, but he never looked like a threat to Benavidez. Andrade was outmatched in every department, and he was simply overwhelmed by Benavidez's power and aggression.

"I'm a warrior, and I'll be back," Andrade said. "Benavidez is a tough fighter, but I believe I can beat him in a rematch."

Benavidez's win was a major statement, and it sets up a potential showdown with Alvarez in 2024. Alvarez is considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, and a fight between him and Benavidez would be one of the biggest in boxing history.
