Vermont man charged with attempted murder in shooting of students of Palestinian descent
Burlington, Vermont — A Vermont man has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of three students of Palestinian descent in Burlington, Vermont.
Jason J. Eaton, 48, of Burlington, was arrested on Sunday, November 27, 2023, and charged with three counts of attempted second-degree murder. He is being held without bail.
The shooting occurred on Saturday, November 26, 2023, near the University of Vermont campus. The three victims, all 20-year-old men, were shot while walking on a street near their apartment building.
Two of the victims were shot in the chest and one was shot in the back. All three victims were transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where they are in stable condition.
Eaton is a former Boy Scout leader who has no prior criminal record. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Chittenden County Superior Court on Monday, November 28, 2023.
The motive for the shooting is still unknown, but investigators are treating it as a possible hate crime. The victims were all wearing traditional Palestinian scarves at the time of the shooting.
"We are deeply troubled by this incident and are committed to working with the Burlington community to ensure the safety of all of our residents," said Burlington Police Chief Michael J. Bradley. "We are also working to determine whether this was a hate crime."
The shooting has shocked the Burlington community and has sparked calls for action to address hate crimes.
"This is a horrific act of violence that has no place in our community," said Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger. "We stand with the victims of this shooting and their families, and we are committed to doing everything we can to prevent future acts of violence."
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has also condemned the shooting and has called on law enforcement to investigate it as a hate crime.
"We are deeply concerned about this act of violence targeting Muslim students," said CAIR National Director Nihad Awad. "We urge law enforcement to investigate this incident as a hate crime and to bring the perpetrator to justice."
The shooting is a reminder of the need to combat hate crimes and to promote tolerance and understanding.
"We must all stand together against hate and violence," said Weinberger. "We must build a community where everyone feels safe and respected."
