Inmate who stabbed Derek Chauvin 22 times is charged with attempted murder
John Turscak, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, has been charged with attempted murder for stabbing former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin 22 times in the prison law library on November 24, 2023.
Turscak, who is serving a 30-year sentence for racketeering and other offenses, allegedly told investigators that he had been planning the attack for about a month and that he intended to kill Chauvin. He said that he was motivated by Chauvin's murder of George Floyd in 2020.
Chauvin was convicted of Floyd's murder in 2021 and is currently serving a 22.5-year sentence in federal prison. He was in the prison law library when Turscak attacked him.
Turscak is also charged with assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
If convicted of attempted murder, Turscak could face a life sentence in prison.
