Statement from President Joe Biden on the Passing of Norman Lear

Jill and I join the nation in mourning the passing of Norman Lear, a giant in the world of television and a champion of social justice. Norman was a transformational force in American culture, whose trailblazing shows redefined television with courage, conscience, and humor, opening our nation's eyes and often our hearts.

The cast of characters Norman created – from Archie Bunker and George Jefferson to the families in "Good Times" and "One Day at a Time" – became fixtures in tens of millions of American lives, often reminding us of family or neighbors. They made us laugh, they made us cry, and they made us think.

Norman wasn't afraid to tackle the tough issues, from racism and sexism to poverty and war. He did so with intelligence, wit, and a deep understanding of the human condition. He believed in the power of television to make a difference, and he used that power to change the world for the better.

Norman was also a tireless advocate for social justice. He fought for equality and opportunity for all Americans, regardless of race, religion, or gender. He used his platform to speak out against injustice and to champion the causes he believed in.

Norman Lear was a true American original. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of Americans to strive for a better world.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Norman's wife, Lyn Davis Lear; his six children, Ellen, Kate, Maggie, Ben, Madeline, and Brianna Lear; and his four grandchildren.

May God bless Norman Lear and his memory.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Biden Jr. President of the United States
