The moment Luai broke news of departure as Panthers star comments on Tigers reports

The Penrith Panthers were rocked on Saturday morning when news broke that star halfback Jarome Luai was set to leave the club at the end of the 2024 season.

The reports, which were quickly confirmed by Luai himself, sent shockwaves through the NRL world, with many fans and pundits questioning the move.

Luai, who has played a key role in Penrith's back-to-back premierships, is said to have signed a five-year deal with the Wests Tigers, worth a reported $6 million.

The 26-year-old took to social media to address the speculation, posting on Instagram: "No pen to paper here. I'll let yous know when a deal is done."

However, it is understood that Luai has already informed his Panthers teammates and coach Ivan Cleary of his decision to leave.

The news of Luai's departure is a major blow to the Panthers, who were hoping to build a dynasty around the talented halfback.

Cleary admitted that he was disappointed to see Luai go, but said he understood the player's decision.

"We're obviously disappointed to lose Jarome," Cleary said. "He's been a great player for our club and we'll miss him.

"But I understand his decision and I wish him all the best at the Tigers."

The Tigers, who have struggled in recent years, are hoping that Luai's arrival will be the catalyst for a return to success.

"Jarome is a world-class player and we're thrilled to have him on board," Tigers coach Tim Sheens said.

"He's a proven winner and I'm confident he can help us turn things around at the Tigers."

The move is also a big win for the NRL, which has been looking to expand its footprint in western Sydney.

"Jarome's decision to join the Tigers is a huge boost for the game in western Sydney," NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said.

"He's a superstar and I have no doubt he'll be a big drawcard for the Tigers."

Only time will tell whether Luai's move to the Tigers is a success, but there is no doubt that it is a significant moment in the history of both clubs.
